Hair loss occurs during chemotherapy because all cells in the body are affected, not just cancer cells. The inside of the mouth, stomach, and hair follicles are especially sensitive to this treatment because they multiply rapidly as do cancer cells. Normal cells eventually will repair themselves, making such side effects as hair loss temporary. Not all chemotherapy causes hair loss, the drugs and dosages used will determine if you lose your hair or not. One may experience hair loss as early as the second or third week after the first chemo treatment. The hair loss may vary between losing all your hair or just some of it. It is also common to experience hair loss throughout the entire body including eyebrows and lashes. Unfortunately there is no known way to prevent hair loss caused by chemo.

Post chemo hair re-growth should take place within six to twelve weeks of the last treatment. The re-growing hair may show changes in color, texture, and curl pattern as it grows back in. The use of organic hair dyes should be eliminated for six months after chemotherapy treatment. Again, the color of the hair may vary as it grows back after treatment, therefore if hair dye is a must during this period, be sure to use vegetable dyes only. Remember, hair loss induced by chemotherapy treatment is usually only temporary.
